Choosing the Right Composter
Composting is a great way to reduce your domestic waste and help your garden at the same time. Compost is excellent for increasing the quality of soil, as it helps it to retain moisture and defends against the growth of weeds. Here are some tips to help you get your compost heap up and running.
Firstly you need to decide what type of waste you wish to turn into organic matter that will be returned to the soil. This can be split into two groups:
Garden Waste – Anything from the garden including leaves, weeds & clippings.
Kitchen Waste – Food waste such as leftovers, bread and even cardboard. Do not use any cooked vegetables, meat or dairy.
Next you should decide which type of compost bin you want to use. There are many different types on the market with a variety of features and purposes. Some common ones are listed below:
The Tumbler. Great for both garden and kitchen waste. As it features a closed design, it will not attract any vermin. As the name implies, waste can be tumbled every few days to ensure the contents are broken up and mixed.
Earthmaker. This unit can compost kitchen and garden waste and employs the use of multiple chambers to help the process. New waste is loaded into the top chamber and begins to compost due to the heat produced. After some time, this can be tumbled into the next chamber where the process continues. This frees up the top chamber for more waste. This process continues down the chambers one by one until the bottom contains the fully matured compost.
Pop Up Composter. Made from special fabric, this unit promotes excellent air circulation and retention of heat to help speed up the composting process. It also can be compressed down for easy storage when not in use, and ‘popped’ up when needed.
Rotol Composter. One of the best composters for heat retention, this unit creates the perfect environment to speed up the decomposition of your waste materials. Mainly used to break down garden waste.
